Governor Brewer Participates in Read Across America Day

March 2, 2010

PHOENIX – Joining local professionals as well as elected leaders from across the United States, Governor Jan Brewer today participated in Sunset Vista Elementary School’s 2nd Annual “Celebrate Literacy, Read Across Sunset Vista” event where she read to Third Grade students in celebration of Read Across America Day.

“Literacy is critical to future learning and professional success,” said Governor Jan Brewer. “Participating in Read Across America Day is a great reminder for all of us that the educational achievement of our youth is fundamental to our nation’s well being.”

Governor Brewer joined local leaders who had been selected to read to Sunset Vista students in grades K-5. Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 will participate in the event by serving as reading buddies for students in younger grades. Sunset Vista Elementary, in the Glendale Elementary School District, has approximately 970 students.

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss.

“I would like to thank Sunset Vista Elementary Principal Jacquie Cunningham and Literacy Advisor Lorri Alonzo for inviting me to be part of this very important day.”
