Governor Jan Brewer Establishes Rural Business Council Focused on Job Growth in Rural Areas

September 7, 2010

PHOENIX – By Executive Order today, Governor Jan Brewer established a new council focused on business opportunities and job growth in rural Arizona.  The Rural Business Advisory Council will provide direct assistance to the Arizona Commerce Authority and rural communities in organizing, coordinating and implementing business development strategies to diversify economies by bringing in new business and creating jobs for Arizonans. Governor Brewer is dedicating $2 million of discretionary stimulus funding to advance rural economic development that will lead to more quality jobs in rural areas.

“Since becoming your Governor, I have secured 7,000 high-value jobs and more than $2 billion in capital investment,” said Governor Brewer.  “With this dedicated funding, my Arizona Commerce Authority and the Rural Business Advisory Council will work with Arizona’s Councils of Governments to identify local projects for additional job creation. Leveraged with local resources, we can truly begin to advance local economies, sustain businesses, increase revenue and create jobs.”

“Private-sector leadership is critical as we position Arizona to be more responsive to business opportunities, and Governor Brewer is making significant, historical change to the way our state pursues economic advancement with this council and the Arizona Commerce Authority,” said Commerce President and CEO Don Cardon. “We are building a model for economic development built on a stronger foundation so that our children and their children enjoy an ecosystem of opportunities that is stable, predictable and reliable.”

A business representative from each Arizona County and a representative of Arizona’s tribal nations will serve on the Rural Business Advisory Council.  These individuals will be named in the next few weeks and will assemble for their first council meeting at the Governor’s Regional and Rural Development Conference in Flagstaff on October 15.  Conference information is available at www.ruraldevelopmentconference.com.
