Brewer leads charge to get illegal immigrants out of Arizona prisons
Last month, I ordered the Arizona Department of Corrections to return to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) -- as soon as possible -- all non-violent criminal aliens as is allowed under existing law. These inmates are the responsibility of the federal government (as is securing our border with Mexico). Arizona should not have to bear this cost.
These plans are already seeing savings as the Department of Corrections turned over 51 illegal immigrant inmates over to ICE officials yesterday. These criminal offenders are now with the Federal Government where they can also begin their deportation proceedings.
The Federal Government is supposed to reimburse local law enforcement for the costs associated with detaining illegal immigrants. Since they refuse to pay their fair share, we will continue to send these inmates to ICE. This action will save the state millions of dollars.
I am committed to fighting illegal immigration, and I have a proven track record of success. Last year, I worked with the legislature to make sure that no public services are being offered to anyone who is in this state illegally.
Not only did we toughen prohibitions on providing services or benefits to illegal immigrants, we also made it a misdemeanor for a state or local government employee to fail to report immigration law violations detected while administering a public benefit or service. I am committed to vigorously defending this law against any challenges that it faces.
As Secretary of State, I likewise successfully defended the Prop. 200 identification requirements all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court – demanding that we require all voters to provide proof of identification to register to vote and to cast their ballot at the polls.
I am committed to fighting illegal immigration and pledge to you that I will continue to do so in a second term in office.

Thank you Governor Brewer for your strength in doing the right thing. As you can see from the town I live in I am only about 20 miles from the border, and know first hand what this is doing to the safety of our country and us the people that live so close to the situation. I get upset when people make this a racial thing. This is about following the laws of a country. I am not against any person who wants to better their life and their families. We just want it done the legal way. I am 58 years old and I have to say I have never been more frighten for this great country. We are a nation who is compassionate to others even to the extent of sending our brave young men and women to fight for freedom for other countries. We are always the first to offer assistance in disasters. As for me as a military wife for nearly 30 years they give up a lot to keep us safe and others. We can not afford not to know who is in our country now and who is trying to get into it, 9/11 is a constant reminder of the enemy within. I ask all who seek this to be their country to do it the legal way and we will all welcome you with open arms. KEEP UP THE FIGHT.

I worked hard to learn English, learned the Consitution and American History, followed every immigration paper works, had medical examination, had my fingers printed, had a picture of my right side 'with ear' for my GREEN CARD. God Bless you Gov. Brewer!!! You sure have opened up the debate and hopefully will make a huge difference. American citizens are becoming more aware of the enormity of the problem. I'm afraid that at this point in time, it's not helping much in California, but I pray that sometime soon, our citizens will wake up and quit electing the liberal reps who don't care enough for the California taxpayer or our safety. Thank You. Although I am not from the state of AZ. I would like to tell you that I am fully behind your stand on this issue. Most everyone here in GA that I know also support you. I feel that most of our country is supporting you on this issue. I often wonder why our representatives are so blind. My grandparents came here from Scotland. They went through Ellis Is. This was a safety net for our citizens, keeping out things that would infect our population, people without a trade, etc. We need something like this on our borders. Anyway illegal should be ILLEGAL.

Governor Brewer. I proudly served 28 years in the US Navy and am both a Viet Nam and Desert Strom Vet. Those long hard years I served were to protect our freedoms and rights as American citizens. I have been all over the world several times and seen every kind of life style there is. There are a few that come close to matching ours, but we are second to none. Turning a blind eye to illegal immigration, such as our leaders in Washington are doing, is the worst thing that can happen to this country. We already have the laws in place to combat illegal immigration, but Washington is to pre-occupied with their own personal aggendas to realize that this is an epidemic of great proportion and must be dealt with NOW!!! I commend you and others like you that will stand up and say; "Enough is enough!!". "If our leaders in Washington don't have the guts to take a stand, then we will handle it ourselves". Please don't give in!!!!! Many in California support what Arizona has done. Our state is bankrupt and one of several reasons is illegal immigration. I am so very proud of what your state is doing. I work in law enforcement and see on a daily basis the burden of illegal immigration regarding crime. It ranges from driving without a license and insurance, vehicle hit and runs, fraud, identity theft, vandalism, burglaries, domestic violence, gangs, rapes, homicides. The costs resulting from these crimes and the costs to the victims are outrageous. Then when you include the free housing, free medical, welfare, food stamps and other social programs the cost increase for the state....add the burden of education, it becomes overwhelming. I've taught classes at elementary schools where the whole assembly, about 200 students, were only spanish speaking, and unfortunately I don't speak spanish so I spent an hour just trying to teach them the basics in English.....all our resources are being consumed. IN SUPPORT OF THIS LAW AND YOUR COURAGEOUS FIGHT, I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO VACATION IN ARIZONA THIS YEAR, SHOP IN ARIZONA, BOOK YOUR BUSINESS IN ARIZONA!!

I would like to say that I am a legal immigrant, we applied to come to the United States of America. We had waited three and a half years before we recieved the ok to come over, I do know that people want to make a better life as we did. We had lived in a refugee camp all that time, and it was not like living in a homeowners association. I think that they should make all illegals go back to their own countries, but not at the American peoples tax expense. What gives illegals the right to demand anything, it would be the same for the prison population to demand they get released. I do not understand how our elected officials will take the side of illegals instead of the taxpayers, the only thing I could think of is that our elected officials are taking bribes from these groups. Most of the illegals do not have any respect for our country, they still fly their own flags and turn the American flags upside down. I do not say that I am an Austrian-American, I just say that I am an American citizen. Our elected officials keep saying it will cost a lot of money to deport illegals, what they can do is get the records from Western Union,Wal-Mart, and other places that transfers money. Get these records and freeze the bank accounts, then after they find out the people in this country that are illegals. This is the best solution to our illegal problem, then you get the money out of these banks. I hear that our elected officials keep saying we do not want to seperate the families, solution they all go back problem solved. What our elected officials should do is make a law that the mother should be a citizen, then the child is an American citizen. I have read that hotels have a program for foriegn mother's can stay till they have a child, I say let the hotel support that child. It seems that the tax payer has no say in how our elected officials will spend their hard earned money, most of these elected officials should resign. I am legal immigrant,an American citizen, a Vietnam Veteran, and I will stand tall with the American flag. How many Americans will do the same? God Bless America and the men & women that defend our flag.

My brother lives there and my nephew is a border patrol officer. He works out of the Yuma office. I wish you would come to Oregon. I hope every state follows suit. It's about time our citzens came first. I am so tired of hearing about rights they think they have. They do not have any rights. I want every illegal to be deported. No free pass for any illegal. Governor Brewer, I am likely the most Liberal supporter you have. Kudos to you and your government. As a Canadian born (now legal) US citizen, I can vouch for how tough it is to become a US citizen. One has to open one's entire life up to scrutiny but with good reason. Although, I did enjoy learning about US history and the ideas behind how the political system was set up. I was extremely proud, as was my husband and children when I was sworn in as a US citizen. I have always had to carry identification as to my status. First, a Temporary NAFTA VISA, then an Immigration card as a Perment Resident. Now, I carry an enhanced driver's licence as opposed to my passport or the document issued when I became a citizen. It is framed and hanging in my home. I have been given no special tax breaks, no free education, and no 'legal loopholes'. I have worked as an RN here and now as an NP. I am still paying back my student loans from graduate school. I am now able to vote, serve on a jury, or work in a VA hospital which I would consider an honor. This is a country of wonderful opportunity. No one should be allowed to take advantage of the system.

It's about time that someone is FINALLY trying to do something about this. Other's have talked about doing something, but you are actually doing it. Thank you so much for standing up for the legal citizens of this nation. Please know that citizens from across the whole country are standing behind you on this decision. I only hope some of the other political leaders of our states (and not just the border states) and our nation, wake up, and listen to what the citizens of this country are saying. Immigration is fine, it's what formed our country, but it needs to be legal- not illegal. Illegal's shouldn't automatically qualify for all of our social services, our school's shouldn't have to be spending their budgets teaching the illegals how to speak English, out hospitals shouldn't be flooded with them. Too many politicians are afraid to take a stand on the illegal immigrants, because they are afraid of losing the votes of the latinos, but instead they need to be afraid of losing the support of the legal citizens of this country (both latino and not). What about legislation that requires that English is our country's official language, and that all signs, food packaging, etc. must be in written in English? Thank you Governor Brewer, and I hope your state ride's out any and all boycotts, knowing that there are many in support of you.

Dear governor - would you be interested in moving to Illinois? We are in serious need of a leader here and you most certainly qualify! I admire you for your stand on this issue. Perhaps some of our elected officials in Washington could follow your lead and actually develop spines. I cannot understand why people seem to feel that it is ok for illegal immigrants to come here. There are mechanisms for entering the country legally - what is wrong with expecting people to follow them?

When I hear people call those in support of SB 1070 a racist and Nazi, it hurts, bad. It hurts that Americans can be like that to other Americans. You are at the "front lines" of this verbal and psychological abuse. I hope that when you're down and discouraged, that you read the outpouring of support that is in these comments and that it gives you strength for another day. As a 11 year resident, living in Tucson, I have seen the negativte impact dealing with illegal-immigration has had on this beatiful state. I hire mexicans to do my yard and maid work.( I CHECK THEIR STATUS). I find them to be good, hard working, and religious people, who I respect and help. Kudos for telling those wet noodles in DC to lead or get out of the way! I'd be vacationing in AZ this summer if I hadn't already paid for a vacation elsewhere. I will be trying out an AZ ski resort next winter, though. I hope that your actions lead to a tourism/convention windfall. I have looked for websites and blogs promoting tourism and conventions as a way to support your stance (an anti-boycott), but haven't found any yet. Will keep watching.

I have a nephew that is from Mexico, he came over legally. Yes lots of paperwork, shots, time and money but legally. I don't understand why Americans are complaining about this law. Arizona is just enforcing a federal law that is already in place. My nephew was told to have his paperwork on him at all times. He does this because it's the law. I support Governor Brewer and hope one day she will run for President or at least move to South Carolina and run for Governor we need someone with a backbone.

Arizona needs to be recognized for sensibility in a time of intense foolishness. The current administration in DC is afraid that this will catch on. Perhaps the 1.2 million the President spent on lawyers to keep his personal records from the public has more to do with his being illegal. He certainly doesn't respect the rule of law, just his rule. I will certainly be addressing Governor Herbert to follow in your foot steps. We've had one killing after another here and even uglier than that is the number of child abductions and molestations by illegals. Time for the majority to be heard! It's amazing - all the TV stations want to show is the protestors. Sorry, I don't understand - whay are 98% of the protestors screaming in Spanish? is that because they can't speak English? Have we had ICE go through those crowds of protesters? Bet 75% are illegal aliens. I'm in favor of enforcing our laws - old and new - and ridding our country of this huge drain on our economy. They drain the health care systems, create personal tragedy and loss because they drive illegally with no insurance, promote crime by identity theft by paying criminals for forged driver's licenses and stolen Social Security cards. I would add a new set of regulations making it a crime to sell a vehicle to anyone without a valid US driver's license. Most of the buy here-pay here used car dealers sell anything to anyone, and even invite illegals to buy cars by selling to those with Mexican issued licenses and faiing to require insurance on their sales. I'm with you on this immigration reform!

Governer Brewer, You are doing a great job with regard to Immigration reform! I live in Goodyear (aka far west Phoenix) & I am sick of Phoenix mayor Phil Gordon and others who abuse legal US citizens by pampering and catering to illegal people. Yes, I am calling it abuse; you can't go anywhere in the far west valley without being overwhelmed by the number of Mexican tire shops, road side food trucks, cell phone shops, boot makers, bi-ligual bill boards and so on that now exist. Many Anglos, Blacks and American people of Mexican decent have had their lifestyles negatively changed because of the influx of illegal Mexicans. Not wanting to leave the far west valley altogether, we have had to move farther and farther West or elsewhere to get out of crime infested, neglected neighborhoods that have been forgotten about by Gordon and others in charge of keeping the city a nice place for everyone to live, not just recent immigrants from Mexico. The demise of Desert Sky mall is another example and I could go on and on. Your signing of HB1070 is a step in the right direction, please don't quit fighting for this cause!

I agree with Lisa from Chicago. Our family was going to go to Colorado for vacation this year but instead we are going to Arizona. We will also try to support the mom and pop stores and restaurants through our purchases. I encourage many to go to Arizona for vacations and weekend trips in support of the Governor and it's people, especially in support of the businesses there.

We thank you Gov. Brewer for your courage to stand up for what is RIGHT, even though you are taking quite a backlash for it. For years now, the politicians have ALL been afraid to do anything about illegal immigrants, simply because they were afraid to receive the backlash that you are currently receiving. Our hospitals are going bankrupt, social programs are all going bankrupt and even your neighboring states are going bankrupt, simply for all the handouts being given to the illegals. I keep hearing the lame excuse that the illegals are taking the jobs nobody else wants. I can tell you..... living in Palm Coast, FL (that two years ago was a booming city), I still see ONLY Mexicans working on the roads and construction crews. The unemployment rate is currently 17% here, and I personally know there are many people that would be happy to have those jobs right now. I could go on forever here, but I will end with " I am so angry with the politicians in this country, not listening to any of their constituents and doing whatever they please, at OUR expense...... Governor Brewer, I would like to commend you for signing this bill. I hope other states follow your lead and pass similar legislation. Living in Massachusetts, I witnessed a "turning of the tide" this past January when we elected Scott Brown to the Senate. That night, the entire country was grateful to the voters of Massachusetts for showing that there is hope for politicians who embrace conservative policies. Now, citizens across this country are grateful to you and the citizens of Arizona who support you for taking this brave stance against the errant policies of our Federal government. Well done!

Thank you, Govenor Brewer. I am a native of Arizona, and have seen first hand the problems and the toll of illegal immigrants have and still are shoving down the throats of all Americans, not just Arizonans. I work in the construction industry, and have had to work along side illigals from other trades. And believe me, none of them care about this state. Only what they can get out of it! They are most definitly a take type of people, and a give nothing back! I also can say that thier quality of work leaves much to be desired. You may ask how I can say this? Well Govenor, and anybody else reading this! When you see it first hand every day, and was raised by a United States Marine who fought for all true Americans rights in two wars. Then to see my rights being stripped away,. Then to only have the illegals given more rights. My federal, state, county and city funds being used to service the illegals, and yet American children, and American elderly folks doing w/ out. Not to mention how our law enforcement has thier hands tied on just how much they can do towards stopping the illegals! That is how I can say this. I have no use for any illegals. Governor Brewer, I am immigrant myself and I support your efforts. I came in the US legally and now I am naturalized citizen paying taxes. I believe that iligal immigration should be deffered from States. There are many opportunities to whom who wants to settle in the US to make it by legal means. We need you here in Massachusetts.

Governor Brewer, you are to be congratulated for the courage you have shown. However, one small change should be made to the new law. Arizona should institute a âCatch and Releaseâ program for illegal immigrants apprehended under the new AZ bill. Catchâem in Arizona. Put'em on a bus and... Release'em in Washington DC. (At Union Station.) As a matter of fact, ALL states should sign a similar bill into law with the Catch & Release program. That'd get Washington's attention!

I really hope that you pass this bill. Its not only about enforcing illegal immigration but securing our country as well. This bill will also help with terrorism. Remember 9/11? Most of the pilots that were involved in the 9/11 attacks learned how to fly planes in Arizona. I have been in Iraq twice serving the US Army for 9 years now, and it is vital that we start securing our own nation before it becomes to late. I voted for you and will vote again.
