$1.05 Billion in Budget Cuts

Last week I called the Arizona Legislature into session to address our state’s increasing budget deficit. This special session focused on cutting the size of government.

Monday we cut an additional $300 million from our state budget for a total of over $1.05 billion.

The economic times our state and our country face is one of the reasons for the need to cut state government so drastically. However, it is not the only reason.

Over the last six years the size of state government grew at an unsustainable rate. This growth of government was bankrolled on the idea that revenues collected by the state would always continue to increase.  This economic model has never worked for Arizona and we now must do what is necessary to fix the failed policies of my predecessor.

Make no mistake, with this special session and budget fixes to come, we will put Arizona back on the track of fiscal responsibility. While correcting the course of our state’s fiscal ship, we will also make sure our educational system receives the priority it deserves as well as those services who take care of Arizonans who need it most.

Since I took office, I have cut more than any other governor in the history of our state.

I have shrunk the size of government, cut more than $1.05 billion in spending and am working diligently to balance our state’s budget.

I would very much welcome your feedback to my efforts to fix Arizona’s budget crisis.

I know it is unamerican, but I would be willing to carry some form of proof of my US Citizenship along with my drivers license. Showing that to any duly appointed party would not be an invasion of my rights but an honor to show I am an American. How many times have I heard Presidents, Congressmen Law Enforcement officials PROCLAIM THAT aMERICA IS A COUTRY OF LAWS. Make them put feet to their words.

Goddard would be a big big mistake for governor. He has no solutions, only criticisms. I believe Jan Brewer is tough, yet fair and fiscally responsible. Everyone i know is voting for her. Border security is so important, and as a victim of a violent crime from an illegal alien, who avoided prosecution by leaving and going back to Mexico, i applaud her tenacity in securing the border effort. thanks again Jan Brewer

We visit Arizona every year and love it. I love everything Jan Brewer has done. It took a woman to take the bull by the horns and get something done. You go girl....We will continue to support Arizona. We have friends who live there and we are so impressed by what she has done. I only wish we could get someone like her in NJ. The federal government wants to control everything and cannot do anything because it has gotten too big. They need to do their job or leave.....

I am in complete support of the Arizona law regarding the illegal immigrants. There are a number of people here already boycotting Sacramento businesses due to Sacramento's stand. I recently changed some travel plans to come through Phoenix and wish I could move there!!

It's a shame that our border issues have turned into a political debate leading up to the November elections instead of the Federal Government protecting our rights as U.S. Citizens. Arizona citizens have lived in harmony with all races and embrace our diversity. My Mother applied for citizenship in 1958 and had to endure a humiliating physical exam, and learn our constitution. I have neighbors as well from the Philippines who had to wait over 17 years for family members to become legal. I don't think it's fair to her, or the many other immigrants who went through so much to become U.S. Citizens. It is a political "double standard" that has been brought to light thanks to fair media outlets, and a Governor who has had the guts to bring to light the realities of illegal immigration. There is a network set up to inform these illegal immigrants of "free" benefits in our State and Country. These benefits were set up to act as a "temporary" assistance to those U.S. & Arizona Citizens in need- instead we are constantly in a budget crisis because of our costs to house & process illegal immigrants, provide health & free education/meals, and a liberal ex-Governor who grew our AZ government to a size that we couldn't support. I applaud you Jan Brewer for your brave, and honest fight to help better our State budget so we can move out of our shameful "50th" out of 50 states with our spending on Education!!

I am in full support of Az Governor's efforts to defend her state from the Mexican invasion. We don't seem to have many governors with such courage and common sense.

Linda and Allan - goleta

We live in Californa and want you to know that we are 110% backing you up on your fight for Arizona. I wish California would do the same thing. Keep on with the good fight. There are a lot of us fighting with you.

Excellent work, stay the course. The feds refusal to protect our southern borders may be driven by a separate agenda. I am not a resident, but have been to Tucson for meetings. Great place. Thanks from me and millions of others, Marvin

Thank you Governor Brewer for committing to fix the AZ budget. I have recently become aware that prison inmates in our state institutions do not pay for their "stay" in these facilities. I recommend a share of their income earned in these facilities be returned to the state to pay for the services they are provided.

Ron - Burleson

Way to go Governor Brewer. We support you and have a net work of people who are boycotting Los Angeles, Austin, Boulder and any other misguided liberal Clity that boycotts Arizona. A disgruntled Texan.

Janet - Peoria

Thank you, Governor Brewer, for doing an outstanding job for Arizona! You are someone who deserves our trust!

mac greer - atoka

God bless you

I sure hope you get to run for president in the next election. Its about time someone had some backbone and stood up for against illegal activity going on in our country. Oh yes, someone in our country is a criminal just as a bank robber or shoplifter is a criminal and we should go after them the same way. If you run for president I will certainly vote for you. scott mcfall dickson tennessee

Governor Brewer, We support you in what you are doing. My entire family now resides in TX, but we still own property and pay taxes in Southeast Arizona. I'm a native Arizonian for 57 year. My family has personally witnessed a murder at our home, that was committed by illegal nationals. We have had our properties vantilized, trashed, and spray painted. I was a correctional officer for ADOC, for many years, and have first hand knowledge of what we had to do to keep Nationals protected and the expense. Not to say, how the Mexican American inmates did not tolerate Nationals either. I've seen my property taxes, schools etc.. go completely nuts. We still have lots of family members in Arizona that are farmers, ranchers, business owners, that feel all the same way. One family member has to carry an assault rifle on her back, when working her cattle. Did I mention she is a sunday school teacher. It is time Miss Brewer, hang tight to your beliefs, we support you One million %. I will vote for you in 2012 presidential election. By the way, half my family is Mexican American. Thank you for what you have endured.

Lu Pierce - Woodstock, Ill.

God bless America!!! We are getting back on track!!! Come on Texas and other states - join in at getting our country back!!!

Alby - Chicago, IL

It's about time that this happend I agree 100 MILLION % w/ Govenor Jan B. Now my question is, is it only happening in AZ or other states too? love u Gov. Jan B. we need more strong leaders like yourself to work on this poor countrythat's falling apart.

Kevin - Peoria

Governor Brewer you've earned my support. As a PC in LD9 I always mention you on my walks. What you and the AZ Congress have accomplished to date getting the spending down has been note worthy. However, I do not agree with the 1% sales tax. I'm glad it is being put to the people to decide. At least it wasn't rammed down our throats as the fed health care was. We finally have a governor that we can be proud of. Keep up the good work. P.S. I signed Dean Martins petition for getting on the ballot in 2010, but I won't be voting for him. Like I said in the being you have earned my support and I will be casting a vote for you as well.

James Tomas - Tucson

This is a perfect opportunity to restructure the tax system of this state, take advantage of the crisis. We learn in economics classes the taxes need to be broad and low. The reliance on sales taxes (that do not account for all services) is insufficient and will cause problems with every recession that comes. Create a sustainable tax system that will last for years to come, allowing Arizona some breathing room and well funded schools. The Reagan tax reform of 1986 is a perfect example.

Cynthia - Hereford,Az

It is about time someone stood up for those who came to America legally. It is a sign of how much the illegals disrespect us and our laws by running over the border and trashing our country!! I will vote for you in the upcoming election. America needs more people who are not afraid to speak up. Cynthia King-Hereford Az.

Nick J Troisi - Paradise Valley, Az.

Thank you Janet Napolitano for leaving Arizona in a mess for a bigger federal checkbook ! Thank you Governor Jan Brewer for having the courage, no other Congress or President, had the balls to preform and make SB 1070 work for Arizona. I support and salute you for the finest job of any political leader since President Reagan and President Kennedy. AMERICA FOR ARIZONA, will be on the move.

leonora - mesa

Thank you very much, finally a strong politican is very eager to turn the state into a livable one, especially along the borders. Those illegals come here by the droves, have their babies so they can get financial help from the government and welfare. Their country can not afford them so here they come and we have to accomodate them and our healthcare gone so sky high because of them. Their children do not learn english, why should we have to subsidize them too. I don't believe if you don't pay your taxes, you get freebies. If you don't work and pay taxies, you don't eat. i am so sick of the many illegals who are being craddled by our government. I work so hard for my money and I always pay my taxes.

Ken - Mesa

WE DON'T NEED ANY UNPATRIOTIC FLUNKIES COMING INTO ARIZONA FROM CALIFORNIA AND OTHER STATES TELLING US HOW TO LIVE OUR LIVES. IF THEY WANT TO LIVE IN A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY LET THEM MOVE TO MEXICO. HANG TOUGH ON THEM, JAN. YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB.WITH THE TOUGH PROBLEMS. I'M IMPRESSED AND YOU HAVE WON OUR VOTE.

John - Lake Havasu City

cut what you have to in order to balance our budget, i have to live within my means and so does the state. Gov. Brewer has my support. thank you for heading the right direction.

Carl - Scottsdale

I support what you have done so far, but feel there are areas where common sense needs to take a bit stronger stance. AZ DOR is the state revenue office - yet they have been cut almost in half. These were the people that collected tax revenue from those slackers that did not pay, so why cut them? The other problem area is cuts in education. We need our kids for the future of this state. Cutting education is cutting the legs out from under the future leaders. Failure to give the future leaders the best education is a mistake. Cut the salaries of the football and basketball coaches at the all levels including the ridiculous salaries at the state Universities, and you could hire many teachers for all our kids, not just coaches for a very small number. I support the immigration laws - old and new - and hope now you will start supporting Sheriff Joe, since he's been trying to enforce those laws for years...

John - Cabe Creek

Way to go on illegal immigration.

Kim - Tucson

Thank you Governor Brewer!! Finally we have a governor who cares about this state and the opinions of those who live here. Stay strong to your beliefs and do not let the protesters make you doubt your decision. You did the right thing and my husband and I support you 100%. May God richly bless you.

Dave

Arizona is fortunate to have governor Brewer.

We live 12 miles from the border. We need the NG here NOW ! Maybe we should give the federal government a deadline to send help or we will pull all AZNG troops out of federal service and bring them home to protect our own border and country.

sarah - phoenix

it's great to see our governor making an effort to try and balance the budget. Maybe the az legislators should take some pointers from her!
